This Friday at the Caboolture Show Rodeo, competitors won’t just be competing for a buckle.
They’ll be competing for the honour of becoming the first-ever winners of the Gail Mackenzie Memorial Buckles at Caboolture Show Rodeo.
Gail Mackenzie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and a passionate supporter of the western industry. Alongside her husband Chris “Macca” Mackenzie, she dedicated much of her life to supporting rodeos, barrel races, competitors and the western community.
Many people know Rawhide Western today, but the journey began decades ago with Mackenzie’s Saddlery in Kyneton, Victoria. Through both the saddlery and later Rawhide Western, Gail and Chris built a reputation for supporting the people who make our industry what it is.
Over the years, our family has proudly sponsored rodeos, barrel races, rodeo queens, junior competitors and associations across Australia. Supporting the western community was never about recognition for Mum — it was simply about helping people and giving back to an industry she loved.
Gail had a genuine passion for seeing others succeed. Whether you were competing for the first time or chasing a major achievement, she was always one of the first to cheer you on.
When Mum passed away in June 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer, we knew we wanted to honour her in a way that reflected the values she lived by — family, community, kindness and support for others.
The Gail Mackenzie Memorial Barrel Race at Caboolture Show Rodeo has been created to continue that legacy.
On Friday night, one Junior Barrel Racer and one Open Barrel Racer will take home a specially commissioned memorial buckle. More importantly, they will become the first-ever winners of the Gail Mackenzie Memorial Buckles at Caboolture Show Rodeo, creating a piece of history that can never be taken away.
While the Gail Mackenzie Memorial is also proudly recognised through the NBHA, this event marks the beginning of a new chapter at one of South East Queensland’s most iconic rodeos.
Our family would like to thank everyone who has supported this event and the many people who have supported us over the years.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Caboolture Show Rodeo as we celebrate Gail’s life, her legacy and the community she loved so dearly.
